This trade is a follow-up to the acquisition of De'Aaron Fox by the Spurs and Zach LaVine's move to the Kings, which involved sending Sissoko and second-round picks from Denver in this three-team deal. More importantly, trading Huerter to Chicago enabled Sacramento to absorb Valanciunas' salary without worrying about luxury tax implications.
The Kings opted not to use their cap space flexibility on Tre Jones’ contract (who was sent to Chicago in exchange for Fox), indicating they prioritize strengthening their frontcourt over finding a replacement for Fox at traditional point guard positions. With players like LaVine, Monk, DeRozan, and rookie Devin Carter already handling ball duties well, they lack size among bigs coming off the bench.
The 2.11-meter tall Valanciunas weighs around 120 kilograms—his presence will undoubtedly address that issue. Previously used as Sabonis' backup center was Trey Lyles at only 2.06 meters tall; however, he’s more suited as a power forward than true center.
This addition allows interim head coach Doug Christie greater freedom with his rotations while enabling Lyles more minutes in his natural position when needed. Although primarily known for scoring down low or grabbing offensive rebounds, Valanciunas also excels as an effective roll man during pick-and-roll situations—a skill showcased by being one of just six centers who’ve executed more on-ball screens over recent seasons alongside Sabonis himself.
